Texas asks teens for classroom hours, instructor hours and supervised practice before the road test. Here is who does what.
Classroom
Online and self-paced. Your teen can start at 14 and finish in six to eight weeks.

How the 30 hours
with you work.
Supervised practice is where confidence is built. The plan makes those hours count instead of just adding up.
Log every drive
Write down the date, length and conditions of each drive. The state practice log is part of the paperwork for the road test.
Follow the lesson plan
Each progress text includes one skill to practice. Stick to that skill on familiar roads before adding new ones.
Save time for night hours
Ten of the 30 hours need to be after dark. Start with short, well-lit neighborhood drives.

Can I ride along during a lesson?
For the first lesson, yes, from the back seat. After that, teens usually learn faster one-on-one.
What if my teen is really nervous?
